The 2019 Borneo Expedition – The Last Frontier, is a road adventure covering the Malaysian states of Sabah & Sarawak and Indonesian Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. A lot of excitement awaits for those who like an extreme experience, that will put your endurance to the test while travelling on muddy roads through the rainforest. You will be joining an experienced team of 4WD experts to ensure your trip is safe and memorable. During the tour, you will discover amazing and untouched nature & wildlife, remote local communities and tropical paradise islands.

Last Date (Day 16): 11 December 2019 – Sandakan
Day 01. Arrival To Kota Kinabalu
Upon arrival at Kota Kinabalu International Airport, transfer Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort.
Day 02. Kota Kinabalu
Free day to explore the city on your own. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner where you will meet the team that will follow on the expedition.
Day 03. Kota Kinabalu/Keningau/Penawan
Today is a big day, you will start our journey. Depart Penampang to Datuk Yap Yun Fook Dairy Farm. You will enjoy touring around Datuk Yap Yun Fook Dairy Farm, the biggest dairy farm in Sabah and enjoy your lunch at the farm with the freshwater fish menu before hiting the jungle. In the afternoon, head to the beautiful Penawan Waterfall Eco Park.
Day 04. Penawan
After breakfast, trek to the Penawan 10-tier Waterfall Eco Park. The park is monitored by the local community in Sarawak to preserve the beauty of Mother Nature. At night you will camp at Tropical Jungle Hideout.
Day 05. Lawas
Ready for a big rough day? Today, after finishing breakfast, off-road deep into the jungle with some pretty steep hills to climb. You will then cross the border between Sarawak, Malaysia and North Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Day 06. Ba’kelalan
After breakfast, continue on to your off-roading journey deeper into the jungle with more steep hills to climb and muddy roads to travel. This day, you will also be camping in the jungle. Cherish the moments to be with nature and come out from the city to gain new experiences and appreciate the wonder of nature can bring you to a peaceful mind.
Day 07. Desa Wisata Pulau Sapi, Malinau
Prepare yourself to restart the journey and explore the bumpy and rough off-road experiences in the deep jungle of Borneo. Today, the goal is to reach Desa Wisata Pulau Sapi, Malinau. Upon your arrival, you will experience a warm cultural welcome by the Lundayeh people. Then, transfer to the homestay at Desa Wisata Pulau Sapi and enjoy dinner, prepared by the local people.
Day 08. Tanjung Selor
Your journey still has half-way to go, and there are more exciting adventures to be discovered. Today your breakfast will be served by the people of Desa Wisata Pulau Sapi and after breakfast, get ready to depart to Tanjung Selor, arriving ont time for lunch. Tanjung Selor is a town and the capital of North Kalimantan province in Indonesia. You will have some time on your own to explore the town.
Day 09. Derawan Island
Your next destination is the beautiful tropical paradise Derawan Island. You will reach the island by leaving by boat early in the morning. After a long and rough ride in the jungle, you an enjoy a relaxing and peaceful environment on and an island surrounded by a cool breeze from the sea, coral reefs and white sandy beaches.
Day 10. Derawan Island
Enjoy the peace of the island resort, away from the busy street in the big cities. Today's activities will be island hopping between Maratua island, Sangalaki island, and Kakaban island. These three islands are home to one of the world’s only saltwater lake as well as one of the largest green turtle nesting sites in Indonesia. You might want to dive or snorkel in this incredible seawater with a spectacular view of the colourful underwater ecosystem.
Day 11. Tanjung Setor/ Malinau
Its time to say goodbye to the beautiful paradise islands. Boat transfer back to the mainland to Tanjung Selor, then continue to Maliau.
Day 12. Malinau/Simanggaris
Today drive to Simanggaris which us close to the Malaysian border.
Day 13. Kalabakan/ Tawau
After breakfast, its time to pack your belongings. This is the last day with the 4WD team. Hit the road and drive in convoy to cross the border by off-roading to Kalabakan to enjoy your lunch and continue the last bit to Tawau. You will be staying overnight at a hotel in Tawau. In the evening enjoy a farewell dinner with the 4WD team.
Day 14. Tawau/ Sukau Rainforest Lodge
After breakfast, you will be transferred by land to the multi-award-winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge, along the Kinabatangan River, Sabah’s longest river. After check-in and afternoon refreshment, take a river cruise using an electric motor in search of some of the 10 primate species. Sukau is home to Borneo pygmy elephants, Orang Utans, proboscis monkeys and all eight species of hornbills in Borneo. Return for a solar-heated hot shower, candlelight dinner overlooking the riverbank followed by a slide show and interpretation by a naturalist guide. Overnight in Sukau Rainforest Lodge, in 2015 awarded by National Geographic as one of the "Unique Lodges of the World."
Day 15. Sukau Rainforest Lodge
Wake up to the calls of gibbons and hornbills and hot Sabah tea. Enjoy an early morning river cruise up the Kinabatangan River to Kelenanap oxbow lake to view more birds and wildlife. After breakfast, proceed to have an educational tour at the in-house Hornbill Boardwalk, located behind the lodge with the naturalist. In the afternoon, you will proceed to have another river cruise for more wildfire sighting. Overnight stay at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge
Day 16. Departure Sandakan
After breakfast, return to Sandakan by land. Transfer from your hotel to Sandakan Airport.
