Straddling the border between France and Spain, Basque Country is an experience unto itself. From beautiful Biarritz on the French side, we take in breathtaking views of the Pyrenees. Later, swap mountains for oceans on the idyllic Spanish Basque coast, then finish in San Sebastián, where pintxos lovers will have fits of gastronomic delights.
Day 1. Walk toward the classic Basque town of Sare alternating between dirt and paved roads passing through small villages. This evening, we are treated to a lovely dinner and our first of many wonderful Basque meals together.
Day 2. Take an exciting walk in the countryside surrounding Bidarray. This evening, watch a game of pelota with the locals in Bidarrya’s fronton—a great opportunity to witness just how passionate the Basques are about this sport!
Day 3. Bid au revoir to the French Basque country and hola to Spain! Our route takes us right into San Sebastian. Along the way, stop for a peek at the Albaola Museum and its reconstructed 16th-century Basque whaling ship on display! Tonight, a classic Basque supper!
Day 4. Set out by foot directly from your hotel to summit and join up with the Camino de Santiago. You'll be spoiled by constant coastal views along this gorgeous hike. Check in at Akelarre and spend the rest of the evening exploring San Sebastián on your own.
Day 5. Head to the coastal town of Getaria famed for supplying the freshest fish to the region. Pause at the oldest winery in town before wrapping up your walk at the UNESCO Flysch & Karst geological site. Tonight, you dine at your hotel's three-star Michelin restaurant.
Day 6. After breakfast at the hotel this morning, you'll be driven the one hour to Bilboa Airport or downtown. Adiós!
