• Visit: Immerse yourself in the dramatic, medieval, walled city of Dubrovnik and all it has to offer. Walk around the fortifications, eat at the acclaimed 360Dubrovnik, be whisked up to the top of Mount Srdj on the cable car, or scuba-dive in its crystal waters. Sample: Join a wine expert for a tasting of renowned local wines. Croatia produces over 50,000 tons of wine a year; it would be rude to leave without giving it a try!
• Listen: Catch a klapa concert of traditional a cappella singing. While these can be found across the region of Dalmatia, the town of Omis hosts the yearly ‘Festival of the Dalmatian Klapas’ – a unique event to attend.
• Stop-over: Spend a night on the idyllic Adriatic island of Hvar; the island’s hub, Hvar Town, has the winding, marble streets, main square and fortress that make it popular with sightseers, but it also has glitzy nightlife with a big reputation. Soothe a hangover with a daytrip to the Pakleni Islands.
• Eat: Visit the picturesque fishing town of Ston and sample its famous fresh oysters. Then take a boat out into the Bay of Kotor, Europe's southernmost fjord.
• Island-hop: Take the short journey between the islands that dot the coast; Vis, Hvar, Brac and Kornati are among the most enchanting of Croatia’s many islands. Take a catamaran for the ultimate, exclusive experience.
• Swim: Jump into the implausibly blue sea or sun yourself on the white sand of Bol, on Brac. The beach is a paradise for surfers too so grab a board and hit the waves.
• Get active: Walk, cycle or shoot the rapids in rafts and kayaks at Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that contains an extraordinary series of waterfalls.
• Socialise: Indulge in Croatia’s national pastime: sit in a cafe, drink coffee (known locally as ‘kava’) and make some new friends — Croatians spend around two million hours a year drinking coffee!
• Savour: Don’t miss out on Croatian cuisine; try ‘Dalmatinski pršut’ (Dalmatian smoked ham), ‘Paški sir’ (sheep-milk cheese from the island of Pag), ‘roštilj’ (grill specialties), and for a heavenly dessert try ‘Palačinke’ (crepes), ‘Baklave’ (sweet pastries filled with chopped nuts), and ‘Knedle’ (potato dough dumplings filled with plums). And don’t forget the Croatian wine.
