The Dominican Republic Beyond the Beach

My Trip:
I was lucky enough to be invited by the Dominican Republic Government and Aman properties, to visit and explore the Dominican Republic. I have not heard much about it before, but I guess because it is an island so far from the Middle East…
The verdict is: I was pleasantly surprised. I thought I would be going to resorts, to enjoy the beautiful beaches and scenery. What surprised me is the amount of history, culture, traditions, local ingredients that are unknown to us. 
 
Highlights:

• Oscar De La Renta’s hometown.
• Bachata and Meringue dance originated in the Dominican Republic.
• Arguably the best cigar in the world.
• Latin way of life, with happy hospitable faces everywhere.

 
How we plan a couple's trip to The Dominican Republic:

• Fly to Santo Domingo for 2 nights, and stay in the center of the colonial district, in one of the many boutique hotels; our favorite was Oscar De La Renta’s house turned into a hotel. Explore the city by foot. Enjoy the many dining options available in the city.
• Stay for 3 nights in Casa De Campo to enjoy activities together, like horseback riding, clay shooting, fitness and yoga, spa treatments, dining, and maybe renew of vows in the charming little chapel perched on top of the mounntain and overlooking the river.
• On the way to Punta Cana, make sure you stop at Hoyo Azul. The Hoyo Azul Lagoon is one of the most sought after attractions, the water in this sink hole is so clear, and the color is florescent blue.
• For a 4 night Punta Cana stay, you can stay at either: Eden Rock Cap Cana. Each villa is a different color and the gardens are beautifully manicured. But we highly recommend the rooms facing the ocean as this is a true Caribbean setting. Or Tortuga Bay, the villas are facing the ocean and the feel is very luxury and intimate. Perfect for a couple who wants a relaxing atmosphere. It is worth mentioning that Oscar De La Renta had an input in this property.
• End it with a bang in total relaxation and ultimate luxury at the new Amanera close to Puerto Plata. The villas are simple, elegant, airy, floor to ceiling windows all around, with every luxury in the room. And I would opt for the villas with the pool, as it is quite a walk to get to the beach so a quick dip in your private pool is a welcome. Make sure you go to a private visit to one of the most notable cigar rollers. I dipped my cigar in Mama Juana drink and enjoyed every bit.
